Car Interior Cleaning:
The Professional Guide
What actually goes into a professional car interior detail — the tools, the chemistry, the sequence — and where DIY quietly falls short in Delhi & Noida conditions.
Why car interior cleaning matters more than a wash
Exterior polish gets the compliments, but the cabin is where you actually live with your car. Delhi NCR air deposits fine PM 2.5 dust into every fabric pore; monsoon humidity feeds mildew under carpets; leather bakes and dries in summer. Left alone for a year, the average sedan carries more bacteria per square inch than a public toilet seat — that is the honest reason professionals do interior detailing as a discipline, not an add-on.
1. The professional tool kit
- HEPA-filter wet/dry vacuum with crevice, brush and upholstery nozzles
- Hot-water extractor (fabric seats, carpets, roof lining)
- Steamer (140–160 °C dry steam for vents, stitching, buttons)
- Soft-, medium- and stiff-bristle detailing brushes
- Microfibre towels — separate colours for glass, plastic, leather
- Compressed air blower for AC vents and seat rails
- Trim clip removers, plastic pry tools, seat-rail brushes
2. Chemistry that will not damage your car
Not every "interior cleaner" on Amazon is safe. A professional detailer chooses chemistry by surface, not by brand:
- APC (all-purpose cleaner) — diluted 1:10 for plastics, 1:20 for headliners
- pH-neutral leather cleaner + water-based leather conditioner (never silicone)
- Enzyme-based odour eliminator for organic stains (spilt milk, pet accidents)
- Anti-microbial fogger for AC evaporator and cabin (post-monsoon must-do)
- Ammonia-free glass cleaner for tinted rear windows
- Water-based dressing for dashboard — matte finish, no glare, no sticky residue
3. The correct sequence (top → bottom, dry → wet)
- Remove floor mats and loose items; shake out on a tarp.
- Compressed-air blowout of vents, seat rails and console.
- Dry vacuum — roof lining, seats, carpets, boot.
- Brush + APC on hard plastics, then wipe with damp microfibre.
- Steam-clean vents, stitching, buttons, gear boot.
- Hot-water extraction on fabric seats and carpets; two passes minimum.
- Leather clean → condition → 10-minute dwell → buff.
- Glass cleaned last (interior side) with a waffle-weave towel.
- Anti-microbial fog through AC on recirculation for 10 minutes.
- Refit dry mats; final walk-around check under sunlight.
4. Professional detailing vs DIY — the honest comparison
DIY at home
- • Household vacuum ≠ HEPA — dust re-circulates.
- • Wrong pH damages leather within months.
- • No extractor = shampoo residue & mildew.
- • 4–6 hours of your Sunday.
